Nerja, located in Andalucia (Malaga), is one of Spain's most popular destinations for international retirees. If you receive a pension from the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, the US, or any other country and plan to make Nerja your home, you need to understand your Spanish tax obligations.
As a Spanish tax resident, all your worldwide income - including your foreign pension - is subject to Spanish Income Tax (IRPF). The Double Tax Agreement (DTA) between Spain and your pension's source country determines whether Spain, the source country, or both have the right to tax your pension. Most DTAs distinguish between government/public service pensions (taxable only in the source country) and private/occupational pensions and social security (taxable in Spain as the residence country).
Spain's IRPF applies national rates plus regional rates. As a resident of Andalucia (Malaga), the combined national and regional IRPF rates on pension income range from approximately 19% to 47% depending on the total amount of pension income received each year. Andalucian IRPF rates apply - among the most competitive of Spain's regions. Nerja's location on the eastern Costa del Sol provides good access to Malaga airport.
Pension income from private, occupational, and social security sources is treated as rendimientos del trabajo (employment income) in Spain. A work income reduction (reduccion por rendimientos del trabajo) of up to approximately 6,498 EUR reduces the taxable base for modest pensions. For higher pensions, the progressive scale applies.
Nerja is part of Andalucia. As an Andalucian resident, the favourable wealth tax bonification applies, effectively eliminating regional wealth tax.
Nerja has a long-established British and Scandinavian expat community. Its whitewashed village character, dramatic Balcon de Europa, and well-preserved coastline attract retirees seeking an authentic Spanish atmosphere with international community support.
Register with the local municipality (empadronamiento) in Nerja within 3 months of arrival. This is the basis for Spanish tax residency and access to healthcare.
File your annual IRPF return (Modelo 100) each May-June, declaring all worldwide pension income. This applies if your total income exceeds approximately 22,000 EUR from a single payer, or 15,000 EUR from multiple sources.
Inform all your foreign pension providers of your Spanish tax residency. Request DTA withholding relief certificates to avoid double taxation at source.
If you hold foreign pension fund accounts, bank accounts, or other assets exceeding 50,000 EUR per category, you must file Modelo 720 (foreign assets declaration) by March 31 each year.

Nerja occupies a unique position in the Spanish retirement landscape: it is authentically Spanish (a genuine small town with a working population, not a purpose-built resort), yet has the facilities and English-language services that international retirees expect. For a couple receiving a combined UK pension of approximately €24,000 per year, Nerja offers a comfortable lifestyle. Property costs are moderate compared to the Costa del Sol resorts to the west: a two-bedroom apartment with sea views can be purchased for €200,000–€350,000, while inland properties start considerably lower. Grocery costs are lower than in northern Europe, and the town's markets, local butchers, and Spanish supermarkets offer excellent value. Nerja's compact size means many retirees can manage without a car, reducing costs further. Healthcare, social activities, and the beach are all within walking distance for most central locations.
Nerja is in the province of Málaga, within the Autonomous Community of Andalucía. Andalucía applies its own regional IRPF scale on top of the national scale. In recent years, Andalucía has reduced its regional rates and is among the most competitive regions in Spain for income tax, alongside Madrid. The combined (national + Andalucían regional) IRPF rates for 2024 are approximately:
For Nerja retirees with pension income in the €15,000–€40,000 range, the effective IRPF rate (after the work income reduction of up to €6,498) is typically 8%–20% — competitive by any European standard. The regional component of Andalucía's IRPF is consistently one of the lower regional scales in Spain, meaning Nerja residents pay less regional income tax than equivalent residents in Catalonia, the Balearics, or even the Valencian Community at higher income levels.
Andalucía applies a 100% bonification on regional Wealth Tax, which effectively eliminates the wealth tax charge for Andalucía residents. Since Wealth Tax is a state-delegated tax (the state imposes it, the autonomous communities administer it and can bonify it), Andalucía's 100% bonification means that a Nerja resident with a UK SIPP of €500,000, a Spanish property, and investment accounts pays zero Wealth Tax in Andalucía. This is a substantial advantage over regions such as the Comunitat Valenciana (Benidorm) or Catalonia, where Wealth Tax remains payable.
Note that the Impuesto de Solidaridad de las Grandes Fortunas (Solidarity Tax) — a national tax introduced in 2022 — applies to net wealth above €3,000,000 for residents of all communities, including Andalucía. This national solidarity tax cannot be bonified by autonomous communities. For the vast majority of Nerja retirees, however, the Solidarity Tax threshold is not reached, making Andalucía's Wealth Tax bonification effectively a complete exemption from wealth taxation.
Nerja has a well-equipped Centro de Salud (health centre) that handles routine GP services for the area's large expat community, including English-speaking doctors during certain sessions. For specialist services and hospital treatment, the main reference centre is the Hospital Comarcal de la Axarquía in Vélez-Málaga (approximately 30 minutes by car) and the Hospital Regional de Málaga for major interventions. The process for healthcare registration in Nerja:
The Agencia Tributaria delegación for Nerja residents is in Vélez-Málaga or the main Málaga city office. However, IRPF returns can be filed entirely online via the AEAT's Renta Web platform, making the physical location of the tax office largely irrelevant for most retirees. Key practical information:
